On the Wave of Possibility

When I think about my daughter's ability to model what is possible to her younger friends, I think "How do I continue to do this very thing for my girl, and my son?" 


Recently, I made a wave chart of all the turning points of great change since the year of my birth in 1974. A fascinating narrative structure emerged from this compact visual exercise. I highly recommend it.

And for those of you who may have misread - it doesn't say PORN. It says BORN. BORN, a public radio documentary I co-produced in 2008-Often when in the midst of living our lives, it is sometimes hard to see how everything will come together. Perhaps we are just before the wave, or up on the crest, or getting pummeled by the crushing weight of resistance and powerlessness, possibly not coming up for air. Then, a break comes, and air is breathed again. Some wisdom and humility are gained. Every sense is heightened. Appreciation for life is restored. 

Then, the current seems to go off in many different directions simultaneously, with massive boulders demanding water to circumvent flow. At times leaving me filled with anxiety and fear that perhaps I've made a grave turn. 


But, yet again, the turn is made. Lessons are learned and hopefully applied to the next set of experiences that come like contractions and expansions.

The anticipated swell is scarier than actually getting through to the other side of that which feels impossible to overcome. Each time a threshold is crossed, something new is possible. Within the anatomy of every wave, lives great, memorable, life-changing stories.

The emergent patterns from this exercise reveal that which makes sense only in retrospect - waves come together in one pool of understanding. This is my 40th year. As I wade in the waters of life, deeply humbled yet with cultivated chutzpah, I am here, ready to swim fiercely when necessary, with unwavering trust in what is.

This is my creative process.

As I step up into a sustainable, fully integrated expression of story, creativity and community, I trust that this ripple is moving from the inside out, in its right time. As long as I strive to be impeccable with my word, avoid taking things personally, as well as avoid assumptions, and always do my best, then I will let the sail take me on the wave of possibility with this beating heart, right now.
